The run to the Roaring Judy Fish Hatchery is the only all natural run in Colorado that goes to a hatchery. Each April, 2-inch kokanee fry are released from Roaring Judy into the East River. Their overnight journey takes them down the East to the Gunnison River and onto Blue Mesa Reservoir, where they typically spend two or three summers. In late August, the salmon begin their trek back to the hatchery and the run usually lasts through October. Division of Wildlife personnel spawn the salmon at the hatchery, taking 3,000,000 to 10,000,000 eggs per year. Catch & release fishing for kokanee is allowed on the Gunnison River and East River from August 1st through the end of October. This is the only "Fly Fishing Only" piece of river around for 60 miles or more. The hatchery ponds are a great place to wet a line in the winter as they are warm spring fed and rarely freeze over. Also kids and adults can throw lures and bait in the ponds. State regulations let you keep a few out of the ponds as well.

Bonus: The sun shines here most of the day in the winter.

Hatches: Good luck!

Flies: Streamers Cone buggers in Black, White and Olive.

Nymphs; Twenty Inchers 8-14, Copper Johns black, red and copper 16-22, brass bead beatis nymphs18-20, Pheasant Tails 16-24, egg patterns 14-16, Pheasant tail nymphs no bead, brassies, miracle nymphs, zebra midges, WD-40's, RS2's, assorted black and gray baeitis nymphs.

Dry's: Some times some very small hatches. Just catch a few and try to match the size and color. Usually the smallest stuff in your box

The Gunnison River:

Conditions: Still frozen over solid in many places but starting to break up in many places. Some areas have ice shelves that extend off the bank for 2 to 10 feet making landing a fish very difficult if not dangerous. Watch out for icebergs floating down the river also calving ice down near the reservoir. Fishing during the heat of the day is the most productive time. Try fishing a double nymph rig with a larger nymph or egg pattern in front of a small nymph. The spin fisherman will do best in the deeper holes with small Panther Martens, Mepps and Rapalas.

Flies: Copper Johns black, red and copper 16-22, twenty inchers 8-14, brass bead beatis nymphs18-20, Pheasant Tails 16-24, egg patterns 14-16, Pheasant tail nymphs no bead, brassies, miracle nymphs, zebra midges, WD-40's, RS2's, assorted black and gray baeitis nymphs.

The Taylor River:

Conditions: The Taylor doesn't get a lot of sun in the winter and the banks freeze up in many places. High pressure systems make for incredible November fishing. It seems to happen every year, the tourist season season is long gone, the leaves fall and the big fish decide that it is time to eat.

Gunnison River: The Gunnison River beginning at Almont and running to the Blue Mesa Reservoir is an incredible fishery, offering opportunities to both float and wade with great success. In November, look for Kokaneee established in runs and rainbows and browns feeding on egg patterns behind them. Try: Parachute Madam X's size 8-16, Elk Hair Caddis 14,16, Yellow Stimulator 10,12, Royal Stimulator 8,10,12, Dave's Hopper 8, 10, 12, Blue Wing Olive 16,18
Bead Head Droppers......Flashback Pheasant Tail, Copper John's, North Fork Wire stone, Sizes 12,14,16, Chocolate Emergers 16, 18, 20, and streamers in a variety of colors.

East River: Recent flows for the East have hovered around 100 cfs. The fly fishing only water below the confluence at Roaring Judy has opened up. The trout are becoming more and more spooky, so take your time casting and fishing the riffles and pools. Look mainly to Blue Winged Olives hatching midday and egg patterns throughout the day.

Taylor River: The lower sections of the Taylor offer very good pocket water fishing. This river is a great go to river when other drainages in our valley are brown with run-off or when the weather is cold and miserable. Since the Taylor River is a tailwater the water temperature is more stable and the river will fish better during variable conditions (ie. snow, freezing cold temperatures, sun, warm temperatures). There is an extensive mix of private and public water. Know where you are, as it is your responsibility. The Taylor River has been fishing great using dry dropper rigs. Use stimulators or small caddis as dry flies and small pheasant tails or copper johns as droppers. There have been some thick Blue Winged Olive (BWO) hatches as well as some other isolated mayfly and caddis hatches. Bring a selection of BWO's, PMD's, Green Drakes, and Adams in small sizes in order to match the hatch.

Thank you for checking in today and thanks to Dragonfly Anglers for the report.

Book your next fishing trip to the Gunnison-Crested Butte area or anywhere in the North America at our FishingTravelNetwork.com, or call us now: 970/749.5581.

Fish-on!

The Streaming Fish LLC
We're In The Water For You Every Day
