Enjoy this look at current fishing conditions from Almont Anglers:
The East River:
Good fishing on the Roaring Judy Hatchery stretch of water. This is the only "Fly Fishing Only" piece of river around for 60 miles or more. The hatchery ponds are a great place to wet a line in the winter as they are warm spring fed and rarely freeze over. Also kids and adults can throw lures and bait in the ponds. State regulations let you keep a few out of the ponds as well.
Bonus: The sun shines most of the day in the winter.
Hatches: Good luck!
Flies: Streamers Cone buggers in Black, White and Olive.
Nymphs: Copper Johns black, red and copper 16-22, brass bead beatis nymphs18-20, Pheasant Tails 16-24, egg patterns 14-16, Pheasant tail nymphs no bead, brassies, miracle nymphs, zebra midges, WD-40's, RS2's, assorted black and gray baeitis nymphs.
Dry's: Some times some very small hatches. Just catch a few and try to match the size and color. Usually the smallest stuff in your box
The Gunnison River
Winters have been mild the last few years leaving much of the Gunnison open year-round for fishing. During colder winters the river freezes over solid in many places or shelves of ice extend off the bank for 2 to 10 feet making landing a fish very difficult if not dangerous. During extremely cold winters anchor ice can scour the bottom of the river and blocks of ice the size off small house can form above Blue Mesa Reservoir. Fishing during the heat of the day is the most productive time. Try fishing a double nymph rig with a larger nymph or egg pattern in front of a small nymph. The spin fisherman will do best in the deeper holes with small Panther Martens, Mepps and Rapalas.
Flies: Copper Johns black, red and copper 16-22, brass bead beatis nymphs18-20, Pheasant Tails 16-24, egg patterns 14-16, Pheasant tail nymphs no bead, brassies, miracle nymphs, zebra midges, WD-40's, RS2's, assorted black and gray baeitis nymphs.
The Taylor River
The Taylor doesn't get a lot of sun in the winter and the banks freeze up in many places. Look for the parts of the Canyon that get the most sun and fish mid day and early afternoon.
Flies: Copper Johns black, red and copper 16-22, brass bead beatis nymphs18-20, Pheasant Tails 16-24, egg patterns 14-16, Pheasant tail nymphs no bead, brassies, miracle nymphs, zebra midges, WD-40's, RS2's, assorted black and gray baeitis nymphs.
