Welcome to November madness! High pressure systems make for incredible November fishing. It seems to happen every year, the tourist season season is long gone, the leaves fall and the big fish decide that it is time to eat.
Gunnison River: The Gunnison River beginning at Almont and running to the Blue Mesa Reservoir is an incredible fishery, offering opportunities to both float and wade with great success. In November, look for Kokaneee established in runs and rainbows and browns feeding on egg patterns behind them. Try: Parachute Madam X's size 8-16, Elk Hair Caddis 14,16, Yellow Stimulator 10,12, Royal Stimulator 8,10,12, Dave's Hopper 8, 10, 12, Blue Wing Olive 16,18
Bead Head Droppers......Flashback Pheasant Tail, Copper John's, North Fork Wire stone, Sizes 12,14,16, Chocolate Emergers 16, 18, 20, and streamers in a variety of colors.
East River: Recent flows for the East have hovered around 100 cfs. The fly fishing only water below the confluence at Roaring Judy has opened up. The trout are becoming more and more spooky, so take your time casting and fishing the riffles and pools. Look mainly to Blue Winged Olives hatching midday and egg patterns throughout the day.
Taylor River: The lower sections of the Taylor offer very good pocket water fishing. This river is a great go to river when other drainages in our valley are brown with run-off or when the weather is cold and miserable. Since the Taylor River is a tailwater the water temperature is more stable and the river will fish better during variable conditions (ie. snow, freezing cold temperatures, sun, warm temperatures). There is an extensive mix of private and public water. Know where you are, as it is your responsibility. The Taylor River has been fishing great using dry dropper rigs. Use stimulators or small caddis as dry flies and small pheasant tails or copper johns as droppers. There have been some thick Blue Winged Olive (BWO) hatches as well as some other isolated mayfly and caddis hatches. Bring a selection of BWO's, PMD's, Green Drakes, and Adams in small sizes in order to match the hatch.
