Welcome Angler,
Enjoy the following look at current fishing conditions from Almont Anglers:
Gunnison River Fishing
Water temp: 50-60 depending on time of day and location.
Conditions: Flows dropped from 650 to 550 because of Taylor Damn lowering flows on the 16th and 17th. The new White Water park salmon ladder has been postpond until our flows drop more. No date yet, sept. or oct. This irrigation diversion has been tough on the salmon and boaters at low flows for as long as we can remember. The new structure will provide a series of four 16-inch steps over more than 100 feet. Big thanks to Dan Brauch at the DOW and The Upper Gunnison Water Conservancy District and area irrigators for collecting the $50,000 and making this happen!
Hatches: Some Blue Winged Olives on cloudy days, some caddis, some stones but no major hatches in August.
Flies: Streamers Cone buggers in Black, White and Olive. Zuddlers in Black and Silver. Nymphs; Copper Johns black, red, green and chartreuse 16-20, brass bead beatis nymphs18-20, Princes, Pheasant Tails(10-16) S.J.W.'s in pink, purple and red(12-16). Hatches: No major hatches but the water is low enough that lots of fish still come up for dries. Salmon are filling up the deeper runs with the larger trout behind them looking for eggs. Some Blue wings on cloudy days.

Wading doesn't get any easier at these flows and fish will congregate more in the deeper runs. Upper Taylor above the reservoir look for good hatches of Drakes and everything else.
