Welcome Angler,

Enjoy the following look at current fishing conditions from Almont Anglers:

Gunnison River Fishing

Water temp: 50-60 depending on time of day and location.

Conditions: Flows dropped from 650 to 550 because of Taylor Damn lowering flows on the 16th and 17th. The new White Water park salmon ladder has been postpond until our flows drop more. No date yet, sept. or oct. This irrigation diversion has been tough on the salmon and boaters at low flows for as long as we can remember. The new structure will provide a series of four 16-inch steps over more than 100 feet. Big thanks to Dan Brauch at the DOW and The Upper Gunnison Water Conservancy District and area irrigators for collecting the $50,000 and making this happen!

Hatches: Some Blue Winged Olives on cloudy days, some caddis, some stones but no major hatches in August.

Flies: Streamers Cone buggers in Black, White and Olive. Zuddlers in Black and Silver. Nymphs; Copper Johns black, red, green and chartreuse 16-20, brass bead beatis nymphs18-20, Princes, Pheasant Tails(10-16) S.J.W.'s in pink, purple and red(12-16). Dry's; Para and Hi-vis Adams(16-20), Blue Winged Olives 16-20, Stimi's, Chernobil's, foam, Hoppers(6-12), Elk hairs, Slick Water Caddis gray, tan and olive(12-18) Wullf's.

East River Fishing

Water temp: Mid 50's,

Conditions: Great flows for August fishing. Fishing is prohibited on the East River from the outlet of the Roaring Judy Hatchery outlet downstream to the Roaring Judy SFU boundary August 1st - October 31st. Taking of Kokonee prohibited.

Hatches: No major hatches but the water is low enough that lots of fish still come up for dries. Salmon are filling up the deeper runs with the larger trout behind them looking for eggs. Some Blue wings on cloudy days.

Flies: Dry's; Blue Wing Olives, Stimi's, Chernobil's, foam, Hoppers(6-12), Elk hairs, Wullf's, Para Adams(10-18), Nymphs; Halfbacks, 20 Inchers, Stones fly Nymphs, Golden Stones(6-12), Princes, Pheasant Tails(10-16) S.J.W.'s in pink, purple and red(12-16). streamers(Heavily weighted) Cone buggers in Black, White,Olive and fall colors. Zuddlers in Black and Silver.

Taylor River Fishing

Water temp:
mid 40's-50's

Conditions: The Taylor dropped from 340 cfs on the 16th to 260 on the 17th and set to drop at least another 50 cfs on the 22nd. Wading doesn't get any easier at these flows and fish will congregate more in the deeper runs. Upper Taylor above the reservoir look for good hatches of Drakes and everything else.

Hatches: Caddis, Stones,PMD's, BWO's, Sallies, Hoppers...etc..

Flies: Dry;Trudes, PMD's16-18, BWO's 16-20, Para Adams, Elk Hair, Stimis, Wulf's, Adam's(all 12-20)and hoppers(10-12). Nymphs; PT's, Princes, Copper John's, Hares Ear, Zebra's and Disco midges(12-22). Streamers; Black, Olive, Brown, Yellow and multicolored buggers(weighted 8-12), and more

Welcome Angler,

Mid-August brings great fishing weather to the Upper Gunnison Valley and the towns of Crested Butte and Gunnison, Colorado.  Expect continued pleasant morning casting with a chance of showers in the afternoon.

Enjoy the following inside look at current fishing conditions from Dragonfly Anglers, our FishingTravelNetwork.com featured outfitter:

East River

Trout are becoming more and more spooky, so take your time casting and fishing the riffles and pools. Please make note that the river is now closed downstream from the confluence of Roaring Judy stream (which flows out of the ponds) with the East as the first of the Kokanee make their way up from Blue Mesa.

The entire run of the East River at the Wild Trout section parallel to the Roaring Judy is running clear. Look for evening caddis hatches on the East in the month of August, otherwise during the day, fish the fastest, deepest heads of riffles and runs."

Dragonfly Anglers recommends the following
for East River fishing in August:

DRY FLIES:

ROYAL STIMULATOR 8,10,12,14
YELLOW HUMPY 12,14,
ELK HAIR CADDIS 12,14,16
PARACHUTE MADAM X 8,10,12,14,16
GREEN DRAKES 10,12 early July

NYMPHS:

BEAD HEAD PRINCE 8,10,12
BEAD HEAD HARES EAR 12,14
WOOLY BUGGER 6,8,10
COPPER JOHN (copper, green, red) 14,16,18,20
BEAD HEAD PHEASANT TAIL 14,16,18,20
MICRO MAYFLY 16,18,2

Gunnison River

The warm weather of August, combined with July & August monsoons, has flows fluctuating each day, so contact the shop for up to the date information. August as always is is hopper-dropper season on the Gunnison. Fishing, especially in the evening hours, has been productive on a variety of dry flies.

Gunnison River Fly recommendations

Parachute Madam X's size 8-16
Elk Hair Caddis 14,16
Yellow Stimulator 10,12
Royal Stimulator 8,10,12
Dave's Hopper 8, 10, 12
Blue Wing Olive 16,18
Bead Head Droppers......
Flashback Pheasant Tail
Copper John's
North Fork Wire stone, Sizes 12,14,16
Chocolate Emergers 16, 18, 20, and streamers in a variety of colors.

Lower Taylor River below Hog Trough (Catch and Release area)

Lower sections of the Taylor offer very good pocket water fishing. This river is a great go to river when other drainages in our valley are brown with run-off or when the weather is cold and miserable. Since the Taylor River is a tailwater the water temperature is more stable and the river will fish better during variable conditions (ie. snow, freezing cold temperatures, sun, warm temperatures). There is an extensive mix of private and public water. Know where you are, as it is your responsibility. The Taylor River has been fishing great using dry dropper rigs. Use stimulator's or small caddis as dry flies and small pheasant tails or copper johns as droppers. There have been some thick Blue Winged Olive (BWO) hatches as well as some other isolated mayfly and caddis hatches on the Taylor in July and you should bring a selection of BWO's, PMD's, Green Drakes, and Adams in small sizes in order to match the hatch.

The Catch Report - August 2007

Crested Butte fishing

Powered by: The Redden Group

Greetings Angler,

As Summer nears the 3/4 mark, we reflect on the fun peak season we've had.  Our fifth consecutive Alaska Retreat during June and July was salmon-filled, with a good shot of Halibut to boot!  Fishing in the Gunnison Valley has been active all year, with a 50 lb-plus , Colorado State Record Mackinaw hauled in at Blue Mesa, near The Black Canyon of the Gunnison.

We heard this fish was estimated to have originated from the class of 1978, 79, or 1980...when a fish and wildlife pilot inadvertently dumped a group of Mack's into Blue Mesa...No kidding!

Please enjoy the following look at current fishing conditions in the beautiful Gunnison River Valley:

Taylor River:
Standard nymph patterns, including Pheasant Tails, stoneflies, caddis, Copper Johns, and Hare's Ears. Also try a Wooly Bugger - black or olive 6-8, and Western Coachman. Streamers - black, olive, white/yellow. Dry fly action with caddis, stoneflies, and Green Drakes and PMDs.

Taylor Catch and Release (The Hog Trough)
Small nymph and midge patterns, including Pheasant Tails 20-24, midges 20-24, and mysis shrimp 20-24. Dry fly action with small midges, BWOs 18-24, and PMDs 14-16, and Green Drakes.

Gunnison River Fishing:
The Gunnison River is fishing well. Standard nymph patterns, including Pheasant Tails 12-22, Copper Johns 12-16, and stoneflies 6-12. Also try a Wooly Bugger - black or olive 6-8, and Western Coachman. Streamers - black, olive, white/yellow. There has been a very good caddis hatch, along with stoneflies and PMDs, and rusty spinners in the evenings.

East River:
The East River is fishing well with both nymphs and dry flies. Dry fly action is good with caddis and Yellow Sallies hatching throughout the day. Nymphing the fast water can be very productive.

Kokanee Salmon Run:
Kokanee are a land-locked form of sockeye salmon. The run to the Roaring Judy Fish Hatchery is the only all natural run in Colorado that goes to a hatchery. Each April, 2-inch kokanee fry are released from Roaring Judy into the East River. Their overnight journey takes them down the East to the Gunnison River and onto Blue Mesa Reservoir, where they typically spend two or three summers. In late August, the salmon begin their trek back to the hatchery and the run usually lasts through October. Division of Wildlife personnel spawn the salmon at the hatchery, taking 3,000,000 to 10,000,000 eggs per year. Catch and release fishing for kokanee is allowed on the Gunnison River and East River. Some salmon make a "wrong turn" up the Taylor River. If you are staying with us, we have an excellent area on our property for salmon fishing. For more information on the salmon run, call our guide service. You can also reach the hatchery at 970-641-0190.

Thank you for checking in today.  Thanks to Willowfly Anglers at Three Rivers Resort and Outfitting for today's report.
