Greetings Angler,

Gunnison:
The Gunnison is fishing well. Standard nymph patterns, including Pheasant Tails 12-22, Copper Johns 12-16, and stoneflies 6-12. Also try a Wooly Bugger - black or olive 6-8, and Western Coachman. Kokanee Salmon Run:
Kokanee are a land-locked form of sockeye salmon. The run to the Roaring Judy Fish Hatchery is the only all natural run in Colorado that goes to a hatchery. Each April, 2-inch kokanee fry are released from Roaring Judy into the East River. Their overnight journey takes them down the East to the Gunnison River and onto Blue Mesa Reservoir, where they typically spend two or three summers. In late August, the salmon begin their trek back to the hatchery and the run usually lasts through October. Division of Wildlife personnel spawn the salmon at the hatchery, taking 3,000,000 to 10,000,000 eggs per year. Catch and release fishing for kokanee is allowed on the Gunnison River and East River. Some salmon make a "wrong turn" up the Taylor River. If you are staying with us, we have an excellent area on our property for salmon fishing. For more information on the salmon run, call our guide service. You can also reach the hatchery at 970-641-0190.

Thank you for checking in today.  Thanks to Willowfly Anglers for the current report.

Greetings Angler,

Welcome to July and peak season fishing in Crested Butte and Gunnison Colorado.
Enjoy the following look at current fishing conditions from Dragonfly Anglers, our fishing travel network partner:

Gunnison River

The Gunnison River beginning at Almont and running to the Blue Mesa Reservoir is an incredible fishery, offering opportunities to both float and wade with great success. As we enter July we have started to see caddis, mayflies, and stoneflies have worked their way up the Gunnisonand the dry fly fishing is excellent. Expect the Green Drakes to work their way upstream to the Almont area in the following weeks. Warm weather has flows dropping each day and the fishing has been spectacular. Fishing throughout the day has been productive. The Gunnison from Almont to Blue Mesa is currently running just below 1,000 cfs and dropping.

East River

The Green Drakes are here! Flows for the East this past week have hovered around 450 cfs and are dropping daily. The entire run of the East river at the Wild Trout section parallel to the Roaring Judy is running clear. Look for caddis hatches and the Green Drakes working their way through Roaring Judy.

Flies of choice for the East River include:

DRY FLIES:

ROYAL STIMULATOR 8,10,12,14
YELLOW HUMPY 12,14,
ELK HAIR CADDIS 12,14,16
PARACHUTE MADAM X 8,10,12,14,16
GREEN DRAKES 10,12 early July

NYMPHS:

BEAD HEAD PRINCE 8,10,12
BEAD HEAD HARES EAR 12,14
WOOLY BUGGER 6,8,10
COPPER JOHN (copper, green, red) 14,16,18,20
BEAD HEAD PHEASANT TAIL 14,16,18,20
MICRO MAYFLY 16,18,20

Taylor River

The lower sections of the Taylor offer very good pocket water fishing. This river is a great go to river when other drainages in our valley are brown with run-off or when the weather is cold and miserable. Since the Taylor River is a tailwater the water temperature is more stable and the river will fish better during variable conditions (ie. snow, freezing cold temperatures, sun, warm temperatures). There is an extensive mix of private and public water. Know where you are, as it is your responsibility. The Taylor River has been fishing great using dry dropper rigs. Use stimulators or small caddis as dry flies and small pheasant tails or copper johns as droppers. There have been some thick Blue Winged Olive (BWO) hatches as well as some other isolated mayfly and caddis hatches on the Taylor in July and you should bring a selection of BWO's, PMD's, Green Drakes, and Adams in small sizes in order to match the hatch.

Thank you for checking in today.  Thanks to Dragonfly Anglers for this current report.
