The Catch Fishing Report-Memorial Day 2007

 Gunnison Crested Butte

Powered by:  The Redden Group

Greetings Angler,

River flows have subsided over the past few days and fishing on the Gunnison River is becoming increasingly friendly.  Check current flows for Crested Butte, Gunnison, and the Western Slope of Colorado.

Crested Butte and Gunnison Hatch Report:

Lakes are opening up everywhere and fish are beginning to move around. General trends during the spring are: Stoneflies begin to move around on the rocks and occasionally end up drifting down the stream bed. Little black stone flies can be seen on the snow.  As water levels increase and water temperatures increase, more insects begin to get active and so do the trout.  Other typical fly patterns are San Juan Worms, Egg Patterns, Stoneflies and Midges. Back stones flies and red midges are great combination rigs to use.

The East River:
Water is high and off color! Mid-day on the ponds.
Prince nymphs in size 12 and 14, Fast water Prince, Twenty-inchers, size 14. Streamers.

The Tayor River:

The Black Canyon:

HATCHERY PONDS @ Roaring Judy:

Crested Butte Fishing

Greetings Angler,

With run-off peaking, area waters are running strong and fast in many places (check current river flows).  Active fishing can be enjoyed on the Taylor River with our partners Three Rivers Resort and Outfitting in Almont (1/2 way between CB and Gunnison on HWY 135).  Enjoy the following look at current fishing conditions from Willowfly Anglers at Three Rivers Resort and Outfitting:

Taylor River:
Standard nymph patterns, including Pheasant Tails 14-20, and stoneflies 8-12, midges 18-22, and egg patterns. Also try a Wooly Bugger - black or olive 6-8, and Western Coachman. Streamers - black, olive, white/yellow. Dry fly action on warm days with small BWOs and midges 18 - 22.

Taylor Catch and Release:
Small nymph and midge patterns, including Pheasant Tails 20-24, midges 20-24, and mysis shrimp 20-24. Dry fly action with small midges and BWOs 18-24. Rainbows are in spawn mode. Please take extra care of fish and their redds.

Gunnison River:
The Gunnison is in run-off. It should be ready to float by mid June. (Pre/Post run-off: Standard nymph patterns, including Pheasant Tails 12-22, and stoneflies 8-12, midges 18-22, and egg patterns. Also try a Wooly Bugger - black or olive 6-8, and Western Coachman. Streamers - black, olive, white/yellow. Dry fly action with small BWOs and midges 18 - 24.)

East River:
The East River is in run-off now with high dirty water. This will last until about mid June.

Kokanee Salmon Run:
Kokanee are a land-locked form of sockeye salmon. The run to the Roaring Judy Fish Hatchery is the only all natural run in Colorado that goes to a hatchery. Each April, 2-inch kokanee fry are released from Roaring Judy into the East River. Their overnight journey takes them down the East to the Gunnison River and onto Blue Mesa Reservoir, where they typically spend two or three summers. In late August, the salmon begin their trek back to the hatchery and the run usually lasts through October. Division of Wildlife personnel spawn the salmon at the hatchery, taking 3,000,000 to 10,000,000 eggs per year. Catch and release fishing for kokanee is allowed on the Gunnison River and East River. Some salmon make a "wrong turn" up the Taylor River. If you are staying with us, we have an excellent area on our property for salmon fishing. For more information on the salmon run, call our guide service. You can also reach the hatchery at 970-641-0190.

Thank you for checking in today.  Thanks to Willowfly Anglers for the report.

Greetings Angler,

Runoff conditions are widespread, however you can definitly get yourself into the fish.  Enjoy the following inside look at current fishing conditions from Almont Anglers, our
FishingTravelNetwork.com partner:

CHECK CURRENT FLOWS

EAST RIVER

Water temp: Mid 40's, off color visibility 4-6 inches.

Conditions: Run off is here for now, and it could be a scary thought since snow pack is at 50%. If we are lucky this is just an early surge and things will start to level off soon. If it does, look for things to turn on again. Best times to try fishing are in the afternoon and into the evening when the flows are dropping and clearing, this is also when the caddis are getting active. Ponds have been producing some good still-water midge action.

Hatches: Midges, B.W.O.'S, Caddis and an occasional Stone fly. I have even seen a few hoppers around also.

Flies: Streamers (Heavily weighted) in black, olive, purple, black/'white (skunk) size 4-10 are fishing very good. Stone fly nymphs like 20 inchers and 1/2 backs sizes 6-12, Gabriels Trumpet, Olive Skip Nymphs olive hares ears, zug bugs sizes 14-16, olive caddis pupa green & chartreuse sizes 14-18 working well, also egg patterns and worms.

GUNNISON RIVER
(Almont-Blue Mesa)

Water temp: 40's

Conditions: Recent increase in flows from the East and turbidity have made the Gunnison off color and supporting 8" of visibility. It is fishable I just wouldn't expect great results. Try more aggressive fishing with streamers and or stone flies. Really look for the calmer water that can be in the willows at these flows. Also try later in the afternoon when the flows drop a little and the visibility improves.

Hatches: Midges, B.W.O.'S, Caddis and an occasional Stone fly. I have even seen a few hoppers around also.

Flies: Streamers(Heavily weighted) in black, olive, purple, black/'white Stone fly nymphs like 20 inchers and 1/2 backs sizes 6-12, Gabriels Trumpet, Olive Skip Nymphs olive hares ears, zug bugs sizes 14-16, olive caddis pupa green & chartreuse sizes 14-18 working well, also egg patterns and worms.

TAYLOR RIVER

Water temp: Low-mid 40's

Conditions: Getting the bulk of the pressure right now with the East and the Gunnison high and off-color. Still cold in the mourning and things don't heat up till noon-ish. Good Hatches with productive dry/dropper fishing use your dry for an indicator till the top water action turns on then go to two dries.
Hatches: Midges, B.W.O.'S, Caddis and an occasional Stone fly. I have even seen a few hoppers around also.

Flies: Dry;Trudes, Para Adams, Elk Hair, Stimis, Wulf's, Adam's(all 12-20)and hoppers(10-12). Nymphs; PT's, Princes, Copper John's, Hares Ear, Zebra's and Disco midges(12-22). Streamers; Black, Olive, Brown, Yellow and multicolored buggers(weighted 8-12),

TAYLOR RIVER
(Catch & Release Area)

The "Hog Trough" catch & release only some of the states largest Brown's & Rainbows to 20 pounds! Often difficult fishing.

Water temp: 40-44

Conditions: low and clear. Most of the pressure is on the weekends with the weekdays seeing the fewest # of fishermen. Be careful around the reeds as fish are still on the spawn in this area.
Hatches: Mysis Shrimp14-22(year round)), Midges 18-22, and B.W.O.'s.

Flies: Pheasant tail nymphs no bead working very well sizes 16-22, Dry-micro parachute, grifiths gnat. Nymph-Princes, Hares ear, 20 incher, Copper John, Brassie, Miracle nymph, Zebra midge, WD-40, RS2, Mysis and Coachmen. Streamers-Conehead buggers in Black, Olive and Brown, Zonker, Platte River special and Egg sucking leach.

Thanks for checking in today.  Thanks to Almont Anglers for the report.

RUN-OFF UPDATE!  Slate and East River brown water making black and tan conditions at the confluence of the Taylor River at Almont.  Look to the Taylor for clear waters with lower flows during run-off.  Also, the Arkansas River at Buena Vista, CO is currently quite fish-able with a black wing olive.

Enjoy the following inside look at fishing the upper Taylor River at "The Hog Trough":

Greetings Angler,

The "Hog Trough" is a magical place located in the upper Taylor River Canyon, where the trout grow exceptionally large and local fishing enthusiasts gather year 'round.  Enjoy this inside look at fishing the Hog Trough with Dragonfly Anglers, our fishing travel network partner.

Fishing the Catch & Release (The Hog Trough)

The Catch and Release, right below Taylor Dam on the Upper Taylor River, is a classic tail water fishery. This means small flies and many people.

In general the flies fishermen are using are midge larva and mysis shrimp patterns. Midge larva imitations include flies like the brassie, gun metal, WD-40, black beauty, tungsten midge and zebra midge. There are hatches throughout the year when the trout will look up. The most popular is the green drake hatch. This is the only time the highly selective trout can be fooled with a poorly presented big dry. Other mayflies one could encounter on the Taylor are pale morning duns, blue winged olives, red quills and grey drakes. There are also caddis flies, yellow sallies and other small stones. When the selective trout are not feeding on the surface, technique becomes paramount. Sight casting is a popular method for fishing the Taylor. The flies must be presented perfectly which means constantly changing weight amounts. Make sure there is no drag in your system. The flies must look as natural as possible.
