Greetings Angler,

The "Hog Trough" is a magical place located in the Taylor River Canyon, where the trout grow exceptionally large and the areas avid fishing enthusiasts gather year round.  Enjoy this inside look at fishing the Hog Trough with Dragonfly Anglers, our fishing travel network partner.

Fishing the Catch & Release (Hog Trough)

The Catch and Release, right below Taylor Dam on the Upper Taylor River, is a classic tail water fishery. This means small flies and many people.

In general the flies fishermen are using are midge larva and mysis shrimp patterns. Midge larva imitations include flies like the brassie, gun metal, WD-40, black beauty, tungsten midge and zebra midge. There are hatches throughout the year when the trout will look up. The most popular is the green drake hatch. This is the only time the highly selective trout can be fooled with a poorly presented big dry. Other mayflies one could encounter on the Taylor are pale morning duns, blue winged olives, red quills and grey drakes. There are also caddis flies, yellow sallies and other small stones. When the selective trout are not feeding on the surface, technique becomes paramount. Sight casting is a popular method for fishing the Taylor. The flies must be presented perfectly which means constantly changing weight amounts. Make sure there is no drag in your system. The flies must look as natural as possible.

Salmon Fry Released - Trout Feeding Aggressively!

Crested Butte Fly Fishing

Powered by: The Redden Group

MASSIVE NUMBERS OF SALMON FRY NOW IN THE GUNNISON RIVER!

In the last few days, Roaring Judy State Fish Hatchery released salmon fry into the East and Gunnison Rivers for their journey downstream into Blue Mesa Lake and adulthood.  As a result we're seeing trout feeding aggressively on the salmon fry near Beaver Creek.  This week get out in the water, throw some streamers, and hold on...

Greetings Angler,

After a fairly dry March, moisture has returned to the Upper Gunnison River Valley; the past few days have brought a great mix of mountain snow and valley sunshine.  The Gunnison River from Almont down to Black Canyon National Park has been ice free for weeks.  Fishing is also heating up on Blue Mesa Reservoir, with no ice to be found and shoreline and boat fishing now underway.  Now is the time for your fly fishing trip to the Gunnison River, with no crowds and hungry fish!

Check out the current Crested Butte and Gunnison Fly Fishing conditions from Three Rivers Resort and Outfitting.  Don't forget to sign up for the Orvis Fly Fishing School this summer at Three Rivers:

Taylor River:
Low winter flows (with some snow melt on warm afternoons). Standard nymph patterns, including Pheasant Tails 14-20, and stoneflies 8-12, midges 18-22, and egg patterns. Also try a Wooly Bugger - black or olive 6-8, and Western Coachman. Streamers - black, olive, white/yellow. Dry fly action on warm days with small BWOs and midges 18 - 24.

Taylor River Catch and Release (a.k.a The Hog Trough):
Low winter flows.  Small nymph patterns, including Pheasant Tails 20-24, midges 20-24, and mysis shrimp 20-24. Dry fly action with small midges and BWOs 18-24.

Gunnison River:
Standard nymph patterns, including Pheasant Tails 12-22, and stoneflies 8-12, midges 18-22, and egg patterns. Also try a Wooly Bugger - black or olive 6-8, and Western Coachman. Streamers - black, olive, white/yellow. Dry fly action with small BWOs and midges 18 - 24.

East River:
The East has been running a bit off-color due to recent snow melt. Standard nymph patterns, including Pheasant Tails 14-22, and stoneflies 8-12, midges 18-22, and egg patterns. Also try a Wooly Bugger - black or olive 6-8, and Western Coachman. Streamers - black, olive, white/yellow. Dry fly action with small BWOs and midges 18 - 24.

Kokanee Salmon Run:
Kokanee are a land-locked form of sockeye salmon. The run to the Roaring Judy Fish Hatchery is the only all natural run in Colorado that goes to a hatchery. Each April, 2-inch kokanee fry are released from Roaring Judy into the East River. Their overnight journey takes them down the East to the Gunnison River and onto Blue Mesa Reservoir, where they typically spend two or three summers. In late August, the salmon begin their trek back to the hatchery and the run usually lasts through October. Division of Wildlife personnel spawn the salmon at the hatchery, taking 3,000,000 to 10,000,000 eggs per year. Catch and release fishing for kokanee is allowed on the Gunnison River and East River. Some salmon make a "wrong turn" up the Taylor River. If you are staying with us, we have an excellent area on our property for salmon fishing. For more information on the salmon run, call our guide service. You can also reach the hatchery at 970-641-0190.

Thank you for checking in.  Thanks to Three Rivers Resort and Outfitting for today's report.

Greetings Angler,

Welcome to April and spring fishing at it's best. March was a very, very good month for fly fishing in the Gunniison/Crested Butte area. Warmer than average temperatures had fish feeding very consistently. Now as we enter April, we are seeing daily dry fly activity, Yes, thats right, dry fly fishing on most days during the afternoon. Midges and Bluwing olives are popping off and fish are rising for them. The East river and the Taylor are where we are seeing the most prolific activity. Nymphing on these rivers as well as the Gunnison is also very productive. The warm weather had the flows high and off color, but a cold snap has brought the river back to ideal clarity and levels for the spring. As it gets warmer, we will begin to see run-off conditions.

Gunnison River:

The Gunnison River beginning at Almont and running to the Blue Mesa Reservoir is an incredible fishery, offering opportunities to both float and wade with great success. As we are entering the first week of April, we are seeing very good nymph fishing on the Gunnison river. The water clarity and levels are at the mercy of the temperatures. Warm weather has flows up and a touch of color adding to the river. Fishing is still very good with the section from Almont to the confluence of Ohio Creek staying relatively clear. Presently, the colder weather we have had last week has the river very fishable and productive all the way to Blue Mesa. These conditions can change daily. Floating the river is also starting to be productive and as flows rise, streamer fishing can be very good up to our true run-off.

Flows in the Black Canyon are at 500 CFS on April 4, 2007.

Parachute Madam X's size 8-16, Elk Hair Caddis 14,16, Yellow Stimulator 10,12, Royal Stimulator 8,10,12, Dave's Hopper 8, 10, 12, Blue Wing Olive 16,18 Bead Head Droppers......Flashback Pheasant Tail, Copper John's, North Fork Wire stone, Sizes 16,18,20, Chocolate Emergers 16, 18, 20, and Eggs in peach or pink 12,14,16

East River:

The entire run of the East river at the Wild Trout section parallel to the Roaring Judy has opened and is fishing very well for this time of year. Finding the deeper runs in the river and drifting small midges, ( Zebra, WD 40, Black beauties, red copper johns, brassies) will be very productive at the right time of day. Water levels and clarity are changing daily as we are seeing the effect of the warmer and colder temperatures. Some runs are seeing high numbers of fish rising for dries during the afternoon hours. This section is FLY FISHING ONLY!

Dry flies to have in the afternoon: Parachute Adams 20,22 : Blue Winged Olives 18,20 : Sierra Dot 20,22 : trail these dries with an emerger such as the chocolate emerger or the black beauty in a size 20!!!

Thanks for checking in and thanks to Dragonfly Anglers for the report.
