Welcome Angler,

Fishing is heating up across the western slope of Colorado.  The Animas, Colorado, and Gunnison Rivers are mostly ice-free and fishing well with hungry early season trout.  Check out this inside look at Gunnison Valley fishing from 3 Rivers Resort and Outfitters, located in the Taylor Canyon on the Gunnison River at the confluence of the productive Taylor and East Rivers:

Fish Report

NOTE: water levels change constantly-be aware of sudden variations in water levels year round.  Snow melt-off will likely be earlier this year due to mild spring temperatures and the onset of rain at elevations lower than 8,000 ft.

Taylor River:
3/21: Low winter flows (with some snow melt on warm afternoons). Standard nymph patterns, including Pheasant Tails 14-20, and stoneflies 8-10, midges 18-22, and egg patterns. Also try a Wooly Bugger - black or olive 6-8, and Western Coachman. Dry fly action on warm days with small BWOs and midges 18 - 24.

Taylor Catch and Release:
3/21: Low winter flows. Small nymph patterns, including Pheasant Tails 20-24, midges 20-24, and mysis shrimp 20-24.

Gunnison:
3/21: Low winter flows (with some snow melt on warm afternoons). Standard nymph patterns, including Pheasant Tails 12-22, and stoneflies 8-10, midges 18-22, and egg patterns. Also try a Wooly Bugger - black or olive 6-8, and Western Coachman. Dry fly action on warm days with small BWOs and midges 18 - 24.

East:
3/21: Low winter flows (with some snow melt on warm afternoons). Standard nymph patterns, including Pheasant Tails 14-20, and stoneflies 8-10, midges 18-22, and egg patterns. Also try a Wooly Bugger - black or olive 6-8, and Western Coachman. Dry fly action on warm days with small BWOs and midges 18 - 24.

Kokanee Salmon Run:
Kokanee are a land-locked form of sockeye salmon. The run to the Roaring Judy Fish Hatchery is the only all natural run in Colorado that goes to a hatchery. Each April, 2-inch kokanee fry are released from Roaring Judy into the East River. Their overnight journey takes them down the East to the Gunnison River and onto Blue Mesa Reservoir, where they typically spend two or three summers. In late August, the salmon begin their trek back to the hatchery and the run usually lasts through October. Division of Wildlife personnel spawn the salmon at the hatchery, taking 3,000,000 to 10,000,000 eggs per year. Catch and release fishing for kokanee is allowed on the Gunnison River and East River. Some salmon make a "wrong turn" up the Taylor River. If you are staying with us, we have an excellent area on our property for salmon fishing. For more information on the salmon run, call our guide service. You can also reach the hatchery at 970-641-0190.

Greetings Angler,

Spring is fast approaching and fishing is becoming more active every day.  Enjoy this updated look at current fishing conditions from Troutfitter Sports:

"With the recent warm weather fishing is starting to turn on! Rivers are opening up everywhere and fish are beginning to move around. General trends during the spring are: Stoneflies begin to move around on the rocks and occasionally end up drifting down the stream bed. Little black stone flies can be seen on the snow. Midges hatch periodically, during these months and can hatch during sunny or cloudy days. As water levels increase and water temperatures increase, more insects begin to get active and so do the trout.  Other typical fly patterns are San Juan Worms, Egg Patterns, Stoneflies and Midges. Back stones flies and red midges are great combination rigs to use."

Go to ORVIS Fly Fishing School this summer!

Greetings Angler,

This summer learn to fly fish with the ORVIS Endorsed Fly Fishing School at 3 Rivers Resort and Outfitting, June 14-15.  Click here for more information on this event from FishCrestedButte.com.

As for current fishing conditions, Gunnison Valley rivers and streams are icy in spots, but open stretches of water are available on the Gunnison River, below Almont.  Water levels remain good for wading with hungry fish.  High pressure should dominate the weather pattern for the next few days, providing mild afternoon temperatures and plenty of sunshine.

Check out this inside look from Dom at Troutfitter Sports on the early season action:

"Caught some very nice fish below Almont .... one really beautiful rainbow.
Most took the Prince in #12, but a few ate a red midge."

Thanks to Dom at Troutfitter Sports for this report.  Thank you for your visit today.
