Angling continues in a relatively mild early January in the Gunnison River Valley. High pressure and frequent sunshine are defining the current weather pattern, providing healthy water flows on rivers and streams in the lower basin.
In Crested Butte, the Slate River is icy, however just down the road the waters in the East and Taylor Rivers are flowing and ice-free conditions exist in many areas. If ice is your thing, then head west out of Gunnison toward Montrose on HWY 50 and enjoy shanty-fishing action near Blue Mesa Lake.
Look for Trout in winter holding areas while you enjoy the afternoon sunshine and mild temperatures, however please consult one of our Crested Butte and Gunnison Fishing Guides when heading out for some safe mid-winter fishing.
