The Catch Fishing Report 07-25-06

Welcome Angler,

Our Fishing Travel Network partner Almont Anglers provides this report on Gunnison Valley angling:

East River - Monsoonal flows are back in the valley this week, with afternoon thunderstorms and potential runoff conditions in the late afternoon. Flows dropped below 300 cfs last week after rising over 500 during one storm. Use caution as lightning has been very common. Yellow Sallies, PMDs and caddis, sizes 14-18, and orange and yellow Stimulators, sizes 10-18, are working. For nymph fishing, try bead-head Pheasant Tails, Princes, olive Hare's Ears, Caddis Pupae, 20 Inchers and double-beaded stoneflies, size 10-18.

Gunnison River (Upper from Almont to Blue Mesa) - Flows have been in the upper 800's (cfs) but can rise the day after afternoon thunderstorms and lose clarity. Dark caddis, Adams, PMD, Royal Coachman, Yellow Sally and Stimulator patterns all have been fishing well. Hopper/dropper rigs have been working, as well.

Taylor River - The Taylor is still fishing well with green drakes, PMDs, caddis and yellow Sallies in the middle and upper sections. The terrestrial action has also been going on for weeks now, and hopper dropper rigs are the most effective way to cover the water. The flows are steady at 302 cfs out of the dam and 387 at Almont. As with the rest of the valley, be ready for the afternoon thunderstorms and lightning.

Thanks to Almont Anglers for the report.  Thank you for checking-in today.

The Catch Fishing Report 07-23-06

Welcome Angler,

Featured Guide Perry Lewis of Troutfitter Sports checks-in with this Sunday morning report:

Flys observed within the past 24-72 hours: Green Drakes, Golden stones, Smaller Mayflies

Perry's fly choice includes: Parachute Adams, Stimulator, Hoppers, Pheasant Tail,
Hares Ear, and Copper John

The hot fly has been the Size #16 stimulator, various colors on the Upper Taylor and
on the area creeks.

Noted weather effects: Heavy rains muddied waters but things are clearing up.
I expect fishing to get real hot over the next few days as water clears
and fish begin to feed hard.

Perry's Fishing Synopsis: Fishing is still great in the Gunnison Valley. Hoppers are
beginning to produce well. Expect to find slow periods throughout the day
especially as water and air temperatures heat up. Riffles will be most productive
during the heat of the day with fish returning to banks and shallows for the evening
hatch. Good evening spinner fall will take fish.  Salmon are being reported
in the lower Gunnison. Here they come. Be patient, switch it up and hire a good guide.

Thanks to Perry Lewis of Troutfitter Sports for today's report.  Thank you for checking in.

The Catch Fishing Report 07/21/06

Greetings Angler,

Here is the updated fishing report for the Gunnison Valley provided by Almont Anglers, our Featured Travel Partner:

East River - Early morning and late-evening fishing on the East has been good this week. Midday has seen very high temperatures in the Gunnison Valley. Flows dropped below 300 cfs this week. Yellow Sallies, PMDs and caddis, sizes 14-18, and orange and yellow Stimulators, sizes 10-18, are working. For nymph fishing, try bead-head Pheasant Tails, Princes, olive Hare's Ears, Caddis Pupae, 20 Inchers and double-beaded stoneflies, size 10-18.

Gunnison River (Upper from Almont to Blue Mesa) - Flows on the Gunnison River have dropped from 1,400 cfs to 860 cfs in the past week. Sunny and hot weather has made for challenging fishing during the middle of the day. The best results have been in the mornings and evenings. Dark caddis, Adams, PMD, Royal Coachman, Yellow Sally and Stimulator patterns all have been fishing well. Hopper/dropper rigs have been working, as well.

Taylor River - The Taylor is still fishing well with green dakes, PMDs, caddis and yellow Sallies in the middle and upper sections. The flows are steady at 302 cfs out of the dam and 387 at Almont.

Thanks to Almont Anglers for the report.  Thank you for checking in today.

The Catch Fishing Report 07-17-06

Greetings Angler,

Here is the current Gunnison Valley fishing report from Almont Anglers, our Featured Travel Partner:

East River - Fishing on the East this week has been very good, except during periods of heavy rain. Flows have been as low as 375 cfs and as high as 436 cfs this week at Almont. Streamer patterns have been working well in olive, black, brown and vanilla, sizes 4-8. Green drakes, size 10-12, and PMDs and BWOs, 14-18, are the predominant mayfly hatches. Yellow Sally stoneflies, 14-18, and larger orange stones, 10-14, are still working well.

Gunnison River (Upper from Almont to Blue Mesa) - Good rainfalls last week have brought Gunnison River flows back up to between 1,000 and 1,400 cfs. On rainy days, try black and olive streamers, size 4-8, or San Juan worms. Nymphing has been good with larger patterns - Pheasant Tails, Prince Nymphs, Zug Bugs, Copper Johns and stoneflies, all sizes 8-14. Midday hatches of PMDs, BWOs, caddis, stoneflies and a few drakes can be expected on most days.

Taylor River - Look for heavier hatches of green drakes midday in the middle to upper sections of the Taylor, as far as the Dorchester Campground. The creeks above Taylor Dam have seen little pressure and are fishing very well. Overcast days have been prolonging good hatches of PMDs, caddis, stoneflies, yellow Sallies and green drakes. Flows out of the dam are steady at 295 cfs, and between 400 and 460 cfs at Almont, depending on rainfall.

Thanks to Almont Anglers for the report.  Thank you for checking in today.

The Catch Fishing Report 07-09-06

Greetings Angler,

Here is the current fishing report from Almont Anglers:

East River - Dry fly fishing is great. Green drakes, no. 10-12; orange stones, 8-18; yellow stones, 16-18; tan caddis, 12-18; and pale morning duns, 16-18; are a few of the insects you will see on the East. Flows are steady at 400 cfs. Remember, the East River is open to fly fishing only.

Gunnison River (Upper from Almont to Blue Mesa) - The drake hatch has moved quickly up the Gunnison. Good hatches can be found near Almont at midday. Fish have moved off the banks to feed in faster water during good hatches. Flows are steady at 1,000 cfs and the water is very clear. Blue Mesa reservoir is backed up all the way to Cooper Ranch, where some nice lake fish have been caught. Strong hatches of caddis, stones, PMDs and drakes can be found most days. Fishing can slow down in the afternoon but hopper/dropper rigs will still produce.

Taylor River - Flows were dropped back to 300 cfs this week from a high of 435 cfs. Changing flows and heavy fishing pressure below the dam have made fishing challenging. Mysis shrimp, Miracle Nymphs, Baetis nymphs, Pheasant Tails and PMD nymphs, all in sizes 18-22, are still the best bet. The lower stretches of the Taylor are all fishing well, with great hatches of orange stones, No. 8-18; yellow stones, 16-18; tan caddis, 12-18; pale morning duns, 16-18; and green drakes, 10-12. Flows at Almont are around 400 cfs, making wading a little tricky.

Thanks to Almont Anglers for the report.  Thank you for checking in today.

The Catch Fishing Report 07-08-06

Happy Weekend!

Willowfly Anglers at 3 Rivers Resort and Outfitting reports that green drakes are on the move; showing up on the upper Gunnison, lower Taylor, and on the East River at the Roaring Judy Hatchery.

Fans of creek fishing should bring the drys to Spring Creek-and heads up on the new rocks at Psychedelic Rocks for the floaters!

Water conditions remain excellent with a little afternoon mud coming in from Ohio Creek due to afternoon showers.  Watch for mud effects with the current wet fishing weather.

Thanks to Willowfly Anglers at 3 Rivers Resort www.3riversoutfitting.com for today's report.  Thank you for checking in.

The Catch Fishing Report 07-06-06

Greetings Angler,

It's great to be back in Crested Butte.  After three weeks of salt and freshwater fishing in Southeast Alaska, I thoroughly enjoyed my first afternoon back on the good old home river, the clear and cool Slate.  Since I've been gone, the Slate has mellowed considerably (today's USGS River Flow).   I was able to bring a fish in.  It's nice to see these outstanding water features in these post run-off conditions.

Today's fishing weather started cloudy, cool, and comfortable.  It had me questioning whether or not I had actually left Southeast Alaska for a little while.  Around mid-day I ventured out between the willows and was greeting by a Great Blue Heron fly-over.  After wading down stream about a 1/4 mile I came to the deep pool just off the main current.  It didn't take long...Nice fish.

Our featured travel partners are taking advantage of these outstanding fishing conditions and are bringing many fish to shore.  Call our travel planning team now at (970) 349-7047 or email admin@fishcrestedbutte.com to book a Crested Butte area fishing vacation, tailor-made to your goals and ability level.  Our trips exceed expectations.

Thanks for reading today.  Check back for updated Gunnison Valley fishing reports and current river flows and fishing weather conditions.

The Catch Fishing Report-Alaska Edition

Greetings,

Our FishingTravelNetwork.com Alaskan Fishing Trip is coming to a close.  However, fishing is heating up back home in the Gunnison Valley!  Here is the latest fishing report from Almont Anglers, our Featured Travel Partner:

East River - Flows are dropping and fish are rising! Flows at Almont have dropped almost 300 cfs to 500 cfs on Monday. Caddisflies, PMDs, Yellow Sallies, orange stoneflies and green drakes are hatching. Remember, the East River is open to fly fishing only.

Gunnison River (Upper from Almont to Blue Mesa) - Runoff is over, and flows have leveled off to around 1,200 cfs. Fishing is great. Wading is still a little tricky, but the fishing is worth filling the waders now and then. Days have been warm, so hit it early, through midday, and again in the evening. Everything has been hatching: green drakes, caddis, PMDs, stoneflies - even the grasshoppers.

Taylor River - Taylor Reservoir is as full as it has been in years ,so flows this week have been increased about 150 cfs to 435 cfs. Wading will be a little tricky through July, but fishing should be great. Some of our largest hatches of caddis have been happening late afternoon into the evening. Green drakes are just starting to hatch in the lower Taylor, along with stoneflies, Yellow Sallies, PMDs, Mahogany Duns and BWOs.

Thanks to Almont Anglers for the report.  Thank you for checking in today!
