Daily Catch Fishing Report 05-30-06

Good Morning,

Here is the updated report on Gunnison River fishing from Almont Anglers:

Gunnison River (Upper from Almont to Blue Mesa) - Warm temperatures are quickly melting the snow pack. Flows have jumped to 2,500 cfs and are still on the rise. Fishing will turn on as soon as flows drop. The best bet in these conditions is a streamer rig in black, brown, olive or white. Work the banks and slower eddies, preferably from a boat because wading can be tricky with the poor visibility. Spin-fishermen should use heavier rigs and work the bottom. Call the Almont Anglers at (970) 641-7404 or stop by for the latest report because conditions and the weather change daily.

Enjoy the spring conditions and the sunshine today.  Please contact us to plan your fishing vacation to the Gunnison Valley.

Daily Catch Fishing Report 05-29-06

Happy Memorial Day,

Fishing the main rivers in the Gunnison Valley is a challenge today, due to spring run-off conditions.  Although river flows have decreased in the past three days, high water continues to "rock-n-roll" on the Gunnison and East Rivers.

Visit FishCrestedButte.com for a listing of established local guides who will get you in the fish while keeping it safe.  You can also check updated flows on your favorite rivers before getting on the water at our USGS River Flows page.

Be safe and enjoy the holiday.  Thanks for checking in.

Daily Catch Fishing Report 05-24-06

Good Morning,

Your fishing weather should be clear through the early afternoon, as we're observing blue-bird skies at 10:00am.  River flows are still high and should continue to provide "run-off" conditions through the weekend, with no cold-spells expected.

Although the waters are high, fishing remains active according to Curt at Willowfly Anglers located at Three Rivers Resort and Outfitting.  He reports consistent strikes along the banks of the Taylor River, in places where the water is a bit more mellow, especially above Spring and Lottis Creek.  The Taylor River Catch and Release area has also been active with #22 pheasant tails being a hot fly.  The "Hog Trough" returns!

Thanks for checking in.  Enjoy the sunshine.

Daily Catch Fishing Report 05-22-06

Good Morning,

In addition to being a great song, "Stormy Monday" appears to be the best description of our 9am fishing weather observation in Crested Butte, Colorado.  Dark clouds building to the west with gusty winds.  Definitely keep an eye on the sky today!

Well, my weekend trip to the Arkansas River Valley turned into more of a hot-springs soak than fishing experience, however Gunnison Valley guides were fishing the high-waters:

Joe Weise, guide at Troutfitter Sports files this report on Spring Creek fishing:

"Spring creek got a bit higher this week, and with that came a little
more challenging fishing, but there were still fish to be caught.  My best luck
came in long, straight sections of water (these are few and far between) but
there are fish for you in some surprisingly fast water as well.
Flys of choice were flash-back pheasant tails and #16 yellow stimulator, with most action coming with the flash-back pheasant tails when the weather was sunny (oddly enough)!"

The following is the weekly report from Almont Anglers:

East River - Flows last week were as low as 650 cfs and as high as 1,160 cfs. Visibility was only several inches into the water. East River fishing will be tough this week unless we get another cold spell. Fish are holding on to the banks with their teeth (so to say). Woolly Buggers in brown, black and olive, stripped off the bank are your best bet. Or hone your skills or teach a friend how to fish on the Roaring Judy Hatchery ponds next to the river. Call Almont Anglers at (970) 641-7404 or stop by for the latest report because conditions and the weather change daily.

Gunnison River (Upper from Almont to Blue Mesa) - Flows last week were between 1,100 and 1,740 cfs, and are expected to keep rising.

Thanks for checking in.  We'll see you out there today.

Daily Catch Fishing Report weekend 05-20/21

Good Morning,

I'm over in the Arkansas River Valley this weekend trying to find some more mellow waters.  It's a two hour drive from Gunnison eastbound on HWY 50, to the town of Salida.  We'll fish some and soak in some hot springs.  I'll let you know how it goes.  Enjoy the fishing over this spring weekend.  Check current river flows on our USGS River Flow page and both current and forecast weather at our NOAA weather page.

Daily Catch Fishing Report 05-19-06

Good morning,

At 11:00am, the fishing weather in Crested Butte is sunny and mild, with light winds along with occasional moderate gusts.  Water conditions present a bit more of a fishing challenge however, as spring run-off is in full force.  View current Gunnison Valley river CFS flows and those of your other favorite western Colorado rivers at our FishCrestedButte.com USGS River Flows page.

Expect river flows to level-off as June approaches, providing a return to the amazing fishing conditions we all know and love.  That's not to say you can't fish today though!  Contact owner/guide Brian Bell at Almont Anglers for information yesterday's productive Taylor River float-fishing trip.  It was a great fishing adventure.

Have a great day and enjoy the sunshine.  Thanks for checking in.

Daily Catch Fishing Report 05-18-06

Good Afternoon,

Brian Bell at Almont Anglers checked in this morning with a report of consistent caddis, midge, stone, and mayfly activity on the Taylor River today as well as over the course of the last 72 hours.  His fly choice today included pt's, princes, copper johns, and buggers, including the black bugger which was his fly of choice.  Brian was able to land some fish today, despite the East and Gunnison River's being in full run-off mode.

I did a recon mission up Spring Creek this morning (sorry for the delay in the report) and the water was in one word: high.  Spring run-off is in full force and the only fish I saw today were in kayaks.  Just kidding of course, however run-off water is a force to be reckoned with.  Please consult an outfitter if you're unsure of water safety precautions.

Daily Catch Fishing Report 05-16-05

Good Morning,

Another beautiful morning in Crested Butte is underway.  Temperatures continue to make an upward turn with today's fishing weather forecast in the 60's in the high country and 70's in Gunnison.

Almont Anglers weighs in with their weekly report, which is also posted at the Colorado Department of Wildlife.  This report was originally posted Sunday, so it's likely that river flows have increased substaintally (check current flows at the FishCrestedButte.com USGS River Flow Page)

East River - Flows are around 900 cfs and rising, and visibility is 6-8 inches into the water. The recent weather pattern indicates the runoff is starting. The low visibility is making fishing tough. Good hatches of caddis and midges are occurring around midday and the best fishing is in the afternoon, when the river clears up a little. Nymph rigs and streamers are producing. Best-bet nymphs are caddis pupae in olive, size 14-18; stoneflies, size 10-14; Pheasant Tails, Princes and Copper Johns, size 12-18. Woolly Buggers in brown, black and olive, stripped off the bank are doing well, also.

Gunnison River (Upper from Almont to Blue Mesa) - Flows around Almont are 1,400 cfs and higher, with turbidity coming in from the East River. The best visibility is in the afternoon as the flows drop. The runoff appears to have started early this year and is making the fishing more difficult on the East and Gunnison rivers. The best bet in these conditions is a streamer rig in black, brown, olive or white. Work the banks and slower eddies, preferably from a boat because wading can be tricky with the poor visibility. Spin-fishermen should use heavier rigs and work the bottom.

Taylor River - Runoff has not affected this dam-release stretch, making the Taylor the best bet in the Gunnison Valley now. Flows in Almont are 315 cfs, clear, and holding steady. These levels are good for both float and wade fishing. Most of the insect activity is midges and caddis, with some blue-wing-olive mayflies starting to appear. Nymphing with Copper Johns, Pheasant Tails, Princes, midges, stoneflies and attractors is the most productive, along with streamers in black, brown and olive.

Featured Fish Crested Butte Guide Marc Solari has just returned from an epic spring fishing adventure.  Here's his report:

"I've just returned from 2 amazing fishing and rafting trips.  2 weeks ago I was fishing the Green river below the Flaming Gorge reservoir.  BWO hatch was so prolific you could barely see the water.  At times so many fish were sipping it looked as though you could walk across the river on the backs of fish!

Gunnison gorge last week was beautiful.  The weather cooperated giving us
pleasantly warm days and comfortable nights for camping.  We had a decent BWO hatch and some top water fishing was available on seams with lesser current.

Most of our fish were taken on pheasant tail and other baetis imitators.
Generally, I would be fishing a stone pattern trailed by a beaded pheasant
sparkle.

Caddis flies began our second night and several decent trout were taken on soft
hackle and other caddis emergers.  Only a few stonefly nymphs were spotted near boulder garden.  It won't be long...We should be seeing more of these larger stones relocating toward the shores in preparation of their emergence the first couple weeks of June.

By the way, there are still a few openings for trips into the Gunnison Gorge but
folks wishing to take part in this incredible adventure should sign up soon
before it's too late!  Contact Marc Solari 970 349 9108."

Thanks to Almont Anglers and Featured Guide Marc Solari for the reports today.  Keep an eye on the increased river flows-they should continue to come up through the afternoon.

Thanks for checking in-enjoy the sunshine.

Daily Catch Fishing Report 05-15-06

Good Morning,

Rain showers in the late afternoon/evening yesterday, brought welcome moisture to the upper watershed.  In addition, temperatures were mild with significant effects on river flows including the Slate River currently up to 608 cfs, East River near Crested Butte up to 1.150 and 1,200 at Almont.  Check the 7-day history of these rising flows on our USGS River Flow page at FishCrestedButte.com.

Yesterday afternoon the East River off Brush Creek trail head was offering nice eddy lines and some stretches of flat water.  We'll keep an eye on this warming trends effects on cfs flows and it's effect on fishing conditions.  Thanks for checking in today.

Daily Catch Fishing Report 05-14-06

Good morning!

The fishing weather today will definitely be more comfortable before 1pm, as weather is expected to build through the afternoon once again.  Tom at Troutfitter Sports reports active lake trout fishing in the Taylor Reservoir Saturday morning.  Trolling deeper waters proved to be the productive method for his boat.

CFS flows have moderated in the last fews days; expect outstanding water clarity today on the Taylor River, Spring Creek, Gunnison River below Blue Mesa Reservoir, as well as on the Upper Slate River where river access is becoming easier with the rapid spring snow melt.  Flows on the Colorado River at the Utah State line have dropped off considerably in the last week.  An early end to run-off for 2006?  We'll keep an eye on it.  Check current CFS readings for major Colorado Western Slope rivers at FishCrestedButte.com on our USGS River Flow page.

Thanks for checking in today and enjoy the sunshine and light winds this morning.

Daily Catch Fishing Report 05-13-06

Good Morning!

Well the good news this morning is that the Slate River is running clear as a bell.  Which, I'm told by a 30-plus year homeowner is normal.  Only in the big flood years does the Slate run cloudy.

Have we found the "groundhog" indicator of the duration of spring run-off in the beautiful Slate River?  If the Slate is clear, does that mean only 3 three more weeks of run-off?  It's probably too early to tell, but something we'll keep an eye on.

It's not that you can't fish during run-off, far from it, as evidenced by this past week's reports from Spring Creek, Lake Fork of the Gunnison River, and Blue Mesa reservoir.  But when the waters clear, water flows decrease, eddy's and holes reappear, and the days grow warm you know the season is fully upon us.  It won't be long.

The best way to get in the fish is with an experienced guide.  Find our featured guides and custom fishing experiences at FishCrestedButte.com.  We'll see you out there today!

Daily Catch Fishing Report 05-11-06

Good afternoon!

Fishing this morning up Spring Creek off the Taylor River was sweet.  First of all, the weather was a dream, 60 degrees, warm sun, with light breezes.  The water clarity was outstanding with excellent visibility through to the bottom of the slower moving water and pools.  There were many trout just to the other side of the main current from where I stood.  In that particular section, Spring Creek is quite narrow, 30 feet across at the most.  I'm happy to report that I am personally now 1 for the season!    A midge and a little luck go along way sometimes I suppose.

Before I went up Spring Creek, I stopped and talked with Brian Bell, owner/guide at Almont Anglers. Over the past week, Brian has observed moderating flows on the East River with a slight increase in water visibility.  If Crested Butte/Gunnison area temperatures remain moderate, without sharp-sustained increases, run-off levels may plateau and begin a gradual decrease as June approaches.  We may not get a significant flood, as a good amount of the winter snow pack has melted out in the Crested Butte upper watershed (as evidenced by softball practice in CB town park!).  Brian was running a float- fishing trip on the lower Gunnsion today where fishing has remained active throughout spring run-off.

Thanks for checking in today-enjoy the sunshine this afternoon!

Daily Catch Fishing Report 05-10-06

Good morning!

Yesterday's afternoon moisture came in the form of snow flurries in Crested Butte.  Today has broke "blue-bird" clear with light winds.  Given the recent fishing weather trends though, I wouldn't wait to fish-get out there!  Plan your custom fishing vacation today at FishCrestedButte.com.

Our Featured Travel Partner, Three Rivers Resort and Outfitting reports clear flows on the Taylor River near Almont.  They also report a Baetis Hatch occurring mid-day, especially on cloudy days.  Here are their "hot" flys:

Nymphing is productive with: Red Copper Johns 12-16, Golden Stones 10-14, Pheasant Tails 12-18, Prince Nymphs 12-18, Midge Emergers 18-22. Scattered dry fly activity productive with: BWO's (Emergers, Cripples, Duns) 18-24, Attractor dries size 14-18 (Adams, Royal Wulff).

Daily Catch Fishing Report 05-08-06

Good Morning,

Results from this weekend's Blue Mesa Fishing Tournament will be posted as soon as they become available.  120 teams competed and undoubtedly some lunkers made their way into the boats.

Albert Mismash, owner of Gunnison Fish and Raft had a great Sunday 05-07-06 float on the Gunnison River.  Between Almont and the Gunnison White Water Park, the two fishermen boated 14 fish, including Brown Trout and larger Rainbow and Cuttbow in the 18-20" range.  Their Fly of the Day was the Conehead White Rabbit on sink-tip fly-line.

The Gunnison river was turbid and fast @ 1300 cubic feet per second, with minimal eddy lines, low visibility, and cold water temperatures.  Despite these less than favorable conditions, Albert sums it up as "A great 5 hour day on the River."  Check out the picture of the nice 19" Rainbow Trout they boated on the Crested Butte Fishing Cam at FishCrestedButte.com.

Albert forecasts better fishing between Almont and Gunnison later in afternoon
when East River run-off contributions are a bit lower and clearer.

Monday's current fishing weather is chilly in the upper basin, with isolated showers and flurries.  I would head toward Almont and Gunnison if I were you.

Daily Catch Fishing Report 05-03-06

Greetings Angler,

It's nice and sunny in Crested Butte with mild temperatures again this morning.  We received some light rain in the upper basin last evening, so keep an eye out for rising river flows today.

Dominique Eymere, owner/guide of Troutfitter Sports weighs-in on local conditions:

TAYLOR RIVER

The Taylor River is fishing good.  Flows are picking up and insect activity is
too. Try pheasant tail #16, golden stone or  twenty incher #12, copper johns,
red, brass #16. Caddis activity, midges and some small Blue wing olives during
the middle of the day.

The Taylor is still cold and not much of insect activity is occurring. Best bet
is small prince nymph or small Chrominid nymph.

Tributaries like spring creek and willow are clear of snow and fishing good, but
you might need to hike over snow fields.

Taylor Reservoir is fishing good for pike.

EAST RIVER

The east river is blown-out generally, but look for cold weather to clear it.
Try streamers or large stoneflys.

GUNNISON RIVER

The Upper Gunnison is Blown out. Try Streamers or Large stoneflys. Look for cold
weather to lock up the snow melt for a few days. Visibility in the river is low.

The Lower Gunnison is fishing great, including Pleasure Park, East Portal and the Gorge. River Flows
are up and the fishing is hot. Try BWO's #18, #16, Caddis in #16, Golden Stones
and Black Stones #10 or #12. Streamers, like the woolly buggers are doing well.
Try White! The usual mix of #16 pheasant tails, copper johns should do the
trick.

Lake Fork of the Gunnison has been fishing hot. This is a good time to go.

ARKANSAS RIVER Now is the time to go. Caddis are evident in and below the town of
Salida. Water flows are good and the fishing is great.

-Thanks to Dominique Eymerer owner/outfitter at Troutfitter Sports for today's report.
